The series ends in the yr 2030, with Tracy having died half-dozen years before. Ted'due south children encourage him to appointment Robin, and he brings the bluish French horn he stole for her on their get-go date to her apartment. Information technology is theorized that Penny'southward proper name comes from a specific episode in season 2, episode fifteen titled "Lucky Penny". This episode is big on letting the audience know how the HIMYM recurring theme of "let the universe do its affair" really affects the characters in the show. Although things did not become the way Ted wanted them to in the episode, he concluded up not having to exit New York Urban center. Ted decides to run into his soulmate and settle down subsequently Marshall and Lily get engaged.[7] He meets and falls for Robin, just their mutual attraction is hampered by Robin's insistence that she does not want to go married or take children, so they agree to only be friends.[43]

For a time in the first season, Ted dates a baker named Victoria, whom he meets at a friend's wedding. She accepts a culinary fellowship in Germany, prompting a long-altitude relationship, which does not last, due in large role to his persistent feelings for Robin. Ted upsets Robin by implying that Victoria bankrupt up with him when she did not; Ted and Robin make out before both women realize they've been deceived. Ted and Robin ultimately reconcile as friends, and, in "Come On", Ted makes one last attempt to win her over, hiring a cord quartet with blue instruments to play in her apartment while he makes his appeal. She finally falls for him some time later when Ted apparently summons a storm with a complicated rain trip the light fantastic.[21] They date throughout the second season, but intermission up in "Something Blueish" upon realizing that they want dissimilar things from life.[22]

Once he returns to the room of the party the morn later on, he picks up a yellow umbrella which can be seen blowing in the wind in the season promo.[44] Also, he becomes the 2d main character to actually ain a machine (a blue Toyota Camry Hybrid) later getting a enhance at his task. By the terminate of the episode, Ted decides to sell the car to help Marshall with his money problems.[45]

At the outset of the 3rd season, an inebriated Ted gets a tattoo on his lower dorsum (his "tramp stamp").[46] He goes to see Dr. Stella Zinman in society to have it removed, and goes on a date with her in "The Platinum Rule." In "Ten Sessions," he falls for her, and after the tattoo is removed, Ted takes her on a "two-minute date" in which he fits an entire dark of romance into the two minutes she tin can spare before work. They begin dating, and at the end of "Miracles" Ted proposes to her. She says yes at the beginning of the 4th flavor. In "Shelter Island", Ted invites Stella'due south ex-boyfriend, Tony, to his wedding; Stella and Tony rekindle their human relationship, and Stella leaves a devastated Ted at the chantry.

After being left at the altar, Ted has problem getting dorsum into the dating world, and his task becomes a source of problem equally well. After beingness hired to design a project for Goliath National Bank, he is fired afterward weeks of unsuccessful work.[47] He attempts to remedy this by starting his own firm, Mosbius Designs, but it is largely unsuccessful.[48] In the season four finale "The Leap", Ted ultimately accepts a job as an architecture professor offered to him by Tony as a peace offering, though Tony'south flick The Wedding Bride, released in the next flavor, pits a caricature of Ted equally its villain confronting a romanticized version of Tony and Stella.[49]

He reaches a low betoken in his personal life in Season 7 and confides in Robin that he is showtime to believe he will never find "The I". This reaches a breaking indicate when he tells Robin he yet loves her after she breaks upward with her boyfriend Kevin (Kal Penn).[50] All the same, Robin does not reciprocate his feelings and moves out.[30] Eventually Ted gives the apartment back to Marshall and Lily and moves into the apartment Barney's girlfriend Quinn (Becki Newton) used to live in.[51] In the episode "Trilogy Time" it is revealed that by 2015, Ted'due south daughter will already be born.

Subsequently a few months, Ted decides to patch things upward with Robin, and she helps him realize that Victoria was the simply woman who has even come close to being correct for him. When Ted calls Victoria, she shows upwardly in a wedding dress and says she is set to run away with him. Initially, he tries to take her back to her nuptials, but after realizing how much he likes her he changes his mind and they ride off into the sunset.[52] Afterwards dating for a few months, Ted proposes, simply Victoria says she will just marry Ted on the condition that he stop his friendship with Robin. Ted tells Victoria that although he is no longer in love with Robin, she is similar family and an irreplaceable part of his life. Victoria wishes him luck, and breaks up with him.[39]

Ted and Jeanette encounter on the subway after Ted notices they read the same book. Jeanette turns out to be obsessed with him: he finds out that she had been stalking him for a year and a one-half (since his appearance on New York Mag), bought the same volume equally him 10 minutes after him (the book they were both reading on the subway), and started a fire outside his lecture hall to encounter him. While his friends are horrified, Ted finds this romantic and ignores the alert signs. In "Weekend at Barney's", Jeanette breaks up with Ted; she takes nigh everything he says and does every bit proof that he is adulterous on her. Barney tries to gear up Ted with other women to get his listen off Jeanette, although Jeanette finds him at the bar and they get dorsum together. Nevertheless, this does not concluding long: Jeanette finds Barney's playbook in Ted's apartment and destroys the place, locking Ted out and throwing his things out the window to the street below. At this moment, Ted decides he is done with the single life and fix to settle down.

Although happy for them, Ted is upset when Robin and Barney get engaged. In "The Time Travelers", future Ted fantasizes about seeking out The Mother weeks earlier they actually meet, and then that he can tell her how drastic he is to meet her. He is supportive of his friends' appointment, merely ultimately realizes his lingering feelings for Robin would make it difficult to exist around them once they are married, so plans to move to Chicago the day after the wedding.[53]

The series' final season revolves around the weekend of Barney and Robin'south hymeneals, during which Ted wrestles with his feelings for Robin. He goes to extreme lengths to find a locket that Robin had buried in Cardinal Park years earlier, which she wants as a "sign from the universe" that she should marry Barney. Moments earlier the hymeneals, Robin has cold feet and tells Ted that she should be marrying him instead of Barney. Ted swallows his true feelings and says that he no longer loves her in that style. He so stands by as Robin marries Barney, and bids an appreciating goodbye to his friends. The season besides contains a number of flashforward scenes depicting Ted's life with the Female parent, including their starting time appointment, the mean solar day he proposed and the birth of their 2d kid.

They hitting it off immediately, and appointment for a year earlier getting engaged. Upon the conclusion of his story, his children tell him that it barely contained whatsoever mention of their female parent and was more than focused on Robin, who divorced Barney later a brief marriage. While Ted denies information technology, the children say that he is clearly seeking their approval to date Robin, which they grant. In the last scene of the series, Ted stands outside Robin's window, belongings the blueish French horn from their first engagement.[24]

Future Ted, voiced by Bob Saget, narrates every episode to his children in 2030, framed every bit the story of how he met their mother. The Mother was finally revealed in the season 8 finale "Something New," played by Cristin Milioti.

In the 3rd flavor premiere, "Await for It", Ted'south children already know the "short version" of the story of how he met their mother, and that it was an incident involving her yellow umbrella. Some clues given are that Ted'south future wife is a college educatee studying economics, as she was in the classroom on Ted'due south beginning twenty-four hour period every bit a professor, where he initially went to the wrong room and started teaching Architecture 101 to what, actually, was Economic science 305. It was besides mentioned that she was at the same nightclub as Ted and Barney on St. Patrick'southward Day, 2008. In the start flavor episode "Abdomen Full of Turkey", Future Ted jokes to his kids that a stripper he meets named Tracy is The Mother (The Mother's beginning name also turned out to exist Tracy in the finale). Future Ted told his kids that he met their female parent "on the day of the wedding" which is afterward revealed to be the 24-hour interval of Barney and Robin'due south hymeneals, in which Ted is the best man. In the flavour premiere of the eighth season, Ted is reading a book while waiting at the "Farhampton" train station after Barney and Robin'southward wedding when "The Mother" (indicated by time to come Ted's voiceover and the appearance of the signature yellow umbrella) is shown arriving at the same station via taxicab, though whether or not they run into at that fourth dimension is unconfirmed as the episode fades to credits with the two unaware of each other. In the Flavour 8 episode entitled "Band or DJ?" Future Ted reveals in a flashback that "The Mother" played bass guitar in the ring that performed at Barney and Robin's wedding. Although the flashback shows that Ted does encounter The Mother at the wedding, information technology is implied that they practice not actually formally meet there.
